MAMAM Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art Aloisio Magalhães (MAMAM) was created on July 24, 1997, which granted the status of Museum to the former Metropolitan Gallery of Art Aloisio Magalhães, honoring the plastic artist, designer and cultural activist from Pernambuco. It is housed in an old mansion from the 19th century and has seven exhibition halls, a library specializing in modern and contemporary art, a technical reserve, an educational room, an administration room, an auditorium, a café and a storage room for museum material.

MAMAM has a collection of about 1,100 works of various techniques covering a historical period between 1920 and 2008. This collection includes fundamental works for the understanding of modern and contemporary Brazilian art, of renowned artists, among the which include João Câmara (with the series "Scenes of Brazilian Life"), Vicente do Rego Monteiro (with a set of screens representing the largest public collection of this important Brazilian artist), Aloisio Magalhães, Gil Vicente, Lula Cardoso Ayres, Abelardo da Silva, Joaquim do Rego Monteiro, Francisco Brennand, Gilvan Samico, José Patrício, Paulo Bruscky, Nelson Leirner, Alex Flemming, Carlos Fajardo, Marcelo Silveira, Rivane Neuenschwander, Ernesto Neto and Vik Muniz.
