The Old Recife

The Old Recife

Recently the old Recife was revitalized. It is old even though it was built in 1600 and had an important commercial and cultural bustle during Dutch domination. I recommend walking around Marco Zero with a beautiful view of the Brennand Sculptures. On the right side of who is looking at the sea, has our "Puerto Madero" with a dozen bars and restaurants of excellent quality; to your left you have a large Craft Gallery. Further in, passing by Bom Jesus Street, where the first Synagogue of the Americas, I recommend a visit, you will arrive in Malakoff Tower Square, where there is the Frevo Museum. Another good request. There is also the Cais do Sertão Museum, with everything about the musical culture of Luiz Gonzaga.

The Old Recife is to walk freely, without worry. If it's on the weekend afternoons do not be surprised to hear the drums with their African rhythm. It is the schools of Maracatus that go out on the streets carrying, with their percussion, a rest of history and our African descendants. I am always moved by this sound because it reminds me of the cultural resistance of the slaves, a painful stain of our history, by the suffering that the white race has inflicted on blacks captured in Africa. Finish your tour by having a good coffee at Paço da Alfândega - a very special shopping mall as it was an adaptation of an old warehouse. There is the Café São Braz and just outside our Livraria Cultura. Rua da Moeda, on Saturday evenings and Sunday is full of bars with live music.
